About

My research is on migration in the later middle ages, focusing particularly on Dutch-speakers in English towns, c. 1350-1500. I am currently working on a monograph on this topic, exploring migration in the North Sea region, patterns of immigrant life and relationships between natives and newcomers.

I am also interested in these issues in the early 21st century, and am delighted that my current postdoc brought me to Berlin, an excellent place in which to study immigration and non-migrants' responses. Previously, I worked in Brussels (another city full of immigrants and transients), and I hold degrees in history and in teaching from the universities of Durham, Dublin, Louvain-la-Neuve and Oxford.
